Last weekend, I drove down to League City and spent the weekend with my dad and stepmom. League City is on the gulf coast, just south of Houston, which of course means I had to drive straight through Houston to get there.
Note to self, and anyone else who's considering taking I-45: Houston makes the drivers in Dallas seem friendly and safe. Really. I'm very happy to live up here. Drivers in DFW are *nice people*. I couldn't understand why my dad kept advising me to 'be careful on the drive' over and over, the week before my trip, until I got to the Houston area.
Anyway, I had a great weekend. Got sunburnt, finally ridding myself of most of my zoo-induced super-duper farmer's tan in the process. Failed to catch fish. (Dad maintains I don't have talent. I maintain that since he was just tossing back the catfish anyway, I knew better than to waste my time catching them in the first place.) Rode around on the boat a lot. Got to ride in the boat when the motor wouldn't start and we had to get towed back to port. Ate lots of seafood. Stepmom backed into my car, left a long scratch and a dent in the right side of it. Spent a long time reassuring her that it was *fine*... now my car is less likely to get stolen! Had a fan-TASTIC time.
I've also received my first paycheck from TCU - hurrah! And I haven't actually *done* anything for them, yet. I teach my first lab a week from tomorrow... and, surprise, surprise! I'm not the *absolute* bottom of the food chain. I have three undergrad TA's assigned to *me*. Oh, the power! *begins gurgling like a mad scientist*
So, things have started to get busy. I *still* feel like I have more time than I did before when I was working eight hours a day, though. In college, I thought all my working friends were crazy to think I had a lot of free time. Now I know better.
Today, my ex-boss from Memphis is flying in to Fort Worth for the yearly AZA (American Zoological Association) conferences. I'm headed out ... right about now! ... to pick him up from the airport. Hurrah!
