It rained most of last night - not a thunderstorm, but a steady rain that would have helped me sleep better if it weren't for the stupid aluminum ladder the apartment groundskeepers currently have stored on the ground outside my window. As a result, rain off the eaves hits it and makes an annoyingly pitched drippy sound that kept me half-awake for three hours.

But that wasn't the worst of it.

As aforementioned, this was not a thunderstorm. There was no thunder or lightning - except once...without warning, deafening, and so close that I could hear the high click-snap that accompanies electrical discharge. I went instantly from half-asleep to totally awake, curled into a ball with my hands over my ears and filled with a sort of primal terror that was, in a word, nightmarish.

I usually like listening to thunder, I should add as a further disclaimer. This was just... bizarre. It seems to me something must have gotten hit, but in the middle of last night, you could not have paid me to set a foot outside my door and see what it was.

This moment of drama brought to you by me.
