Biologist for Sale.
Aug. 11th, 2004 04:44 pmToday, the job applications continue. Once again I have failed to get the better part of the Useful Stuff I Had Planned (tm) done - for example, exercise - but I did get three more apps ready for mailing.
What's currently in the pot:
1) Ducks Unlimited Internship (Memphis, TN)
This is the one I'm really pinning my hopes on. It's temporary, the pay is crap and I'd end up living with Mom again, but it's great experience... and I have come to realize that the phenomenon of free housing is worth putting up with a woman who wants to feed you and do your laundry. These things just don't seem so horrifying anymore. Also, it's in Memphis. BIG PLUS.
2) Wildlife Biologist, Pinnacles National Monument (Carlsbad, CA)
California condor radio telemetry, observation, and rehab. Hiking, trapping, etc. In Carlsbad. Oh, the coolness. One of the things in the list of "work tasks" says, "Participate in trapping, handling, or hazing condors" ... which I have to wonder about. Hazing? "Rotten elk - EAT IT! EAT IT! Or you're out of the Condor Club!" It makes me giggle.
3) Resident Intern, Wildlife In Crisis (Weston, CT)
Free housing, "partial board" - Essentially crap as far as making money goes. But it boasts intensive training in wildlife rehabilitation, and like the DU position, it has the advantage of being a really nice stepping-stone if I wind up going the Rehab/Conservation route. This is the <3 <3 <3 job, less practical and more just plain fun - I admit it. Why don't the things I really LIKE to do pay good money? ;_; Ah, the injustice of life.
4) Wildlife Rehabilitation Manager, IBRRC (San Pedro, CA)
Okay. So they have a lot more wildlife in Cally than elsewhere. Go fig. IBRRC (International Bird Rescue Research Center) is the group I've raved about since my South Africa trip - these are the folks I really want to work for. And this job application is ballsy, as I'm really a twee bit underqualified, but it's worth a shot.
5) Fish & Wildlife Biologist (Endangered Species), USFWS (Fairbanks, AK)
...Yes. The AK is Alaska, not (as I originally thought) Arkansas. I have mailed off an application to a place with "Mail Stop #111" in the address. OMFGWTFAAAAGH. I am alternately very enthusiastic about this possibility, and very convinced I need to turn myself in to a mental institution. Did you know they actually PAY YOU to live there? Because there are VERY NEARLY AS MANY SQUARE MILES OF LAND AS THERE ARE PEOPLE. On the one hand: Alaska! Ee! But on the other hand: Alaska! Augh! Holy crap, say I.
