Got a call back this morning from the nice folks at Pinnacles National Monument, who gave me the number for the regional office that was apparently reviewing applications for the position. How confusing! A call to that number provided me with disappointing but enlightening information: My application didn't best match their requirements, and the position has, in fact, already been filled.

Also got a reply from Ducks Unlimited (via e-mail) today. Hiring for the position is "on hold indefinitely." Which leads me to wonder why the hell it's still listed on the webpage with the phrase "will be filled as soon as possible."

I am told that - once upon a time - you at least got a letter from potential employers thanking you for your application, and informing you that unfortunately you were not selected. Heck, you get that much from COLLEGES, who get a lot more applications than your average company, I am betting. But I have been notified by all of *one* company that I wasn't selected. A negative is better than a question-mark, really, folks.

We live in an age where form letters are too much trouble. It is a sad, sad thing.

Applied for the job you found me on idealist. I got the read-confirm e-mail just now. Life will find a way!

"Thank you for your recent interest in the ECO/NOAA internship #684 -
Coastal & Marine Planning and Assessment Associate. You have been
selected as a top candidate for this position and your application has
been referred to the NOAA project advisors for further evaluation.
Please let me know if your availability or interest has changed,
concerning this particular position."

Watch, as I attempt to write an e-mail back stating my interest without drooling over the e-mail.
