Not doomsaying.
Aug. 28th, 2005 10:30 amMy thoughts are with the folks down in New Orleans - and also with
azrachael, just a hop, skip, and a jump away in Pensacola.
Because everybody in my neck of the woods is bound to say something about the storm - we'll see it here in Memphis on Tuesday in the form of some pretty strong winds - here's my obligatory commentary:
We discussed the ramifications of a changing global climate in one of my eco classes last year, and there's at least one theory that purports that as we screw more and more with the water cycle (we're living on credit right now, with tons of water trapped behind dams that would otherwise be in the system), we'll see greater severity in the weather: Stronger droughts, more floods, and harsher storms. But NOAA's official outlook is brighter, at least in the long-term: This article says our bounty of storms is a cyclic thing:
"This confluence of optimal ocean and atmosphere conditions has been known to produce increased tropical storm activity in multi-decadal (approximately 20-30 year) cycles. Because of this, NOAA expects a continuation of above-normal seasons for another decade or perhaps longer. NOAA's research shows that this reoccurring cycle is the dominant climate factor that controls Atlantic hurricane activity. Any potentially weak signal associated with longer-term climate change appears to be a minor factor."
So that's my cheery thought for the day. At least it's, y'know, not our fault.
In other news, I'm prepping for my first class at Southwest tomorrow morning. Part of this prepping included dragging myself up at 8 am, so as to be able to get to sleep at a decent hour tonight. I've gotta be up around five tomorrow, so... bleach.
It's been a good, calm few days. I'm eagerly anticipating the arrival of my car, I've gotten caught up on a lot of little things that have been hovering about waiting to get done, and Chorale starts this week. <3 <3 It's been far too long since I've done any singing. I feel a bit guilty, being so happy for myself when things down south are really going to suck for a lot of people. But I'll take my good fortune where I can get it. ... Because all will be made karmically even when the New Madrid Fault decides to cause trouble.
And to end, ( Quiz of the Day )
