I went to the Chorale director's farewell party Saturday evening. He is leaving us to serve as head of the American Choral Directors Association, a position for which I can't think of a more perfect individual, so I'm immeasurably pleased for him. Nonetheless, I had a nice little bawl after the party, because I'm going to miss his direction, insights, and humor immensely.
What better way could there be to send him off, than to have him direct us one last time? So halfway through the evening, sheet music got passed around and fifty partygoers put down their champagne and sang Morten Lauridsen's O Magnum Mysterium and O Nata Lux.
I've got a new standard by which to judge parties.
