Mail Theft Update:
Dec. 30th, 2004 10:52 pmThe back of the check was stamped 'deposit only, Firestone Tire and Service Center', and the money was deposited to an account with Bank of America. My apartment complex is currently initiating a loss prevention file for the money, which will eventually make its way back to me. I've been offered a fax of the check, which I intend to accept.
The check was cut on October 14th, and probably mailed around the 18th - when the Post Office box was still in my name. It was clearly either stolen or lost before it even made it to me.
I'm guessing at this point that someone signed the check over to Firestone for new tires or something. And either had fake ID, or Firestone did not check it. Detective Bertz, on the case!
Having also been given the store number for the Firestone place, I called the store and asked to speak to the manager. He wasn't in, but I can chat with him in the morning. The employee I spoke with did say that checks cannot be processed or signed over without a driver's license number. It ought to be written on the check. Must talk to Copper Crossing again.
In other, possibly related (but I hope not) news... I received a credit card bill in the mail for an account that I never opened with Capital One. It was a bill for zero dollars, but I am still suspicious. Not sure if this is just Capital One trying to bullshit me into calling them and demanding to know what's up so they can try to sell me stuff, or more creepiness. Color me paranoid.
It might be time to run a credit check on myself.
