teslanomaly: (Science!)
Oh, internet, how I have missed thee! Let me COUNT THE WAYS.

In any case, I'm now wired again, though my connection is disturbingly laggy. Hopefully some of that stems from the weather and the line not yet being buried, and things will smooth out soon. Even with the lag, I feel connected to the world again. I've had access from work, but I've been a good little newbie and kept my internet time to a minimum ... at least until I work out how much is acceptable.

So far, work has been great. I'm still learning the ropes, so a lot of what I do is sit around and read protocols, which is boring as hell. However, it's also very educational. I have a much better idea of what sort of projects I'm going to be involved in, now.

Wednesday, I GOT TO DO BIOLOGY. I drove out to Smallville Smithville and met some folks to sample a stream. I put on chest waders and hiked down to a creek (and INTO the creek) and saw a lot of animal tracks and collected samples and OMG GOT TO DO SOMETHING for which I have been academically prepared to do. Imagine! It was awesome. I got to do all the things I loved to do when I was a kid... and they paid me to do it. It was also a long, long day, though, and I got home at about 7:30 at night. There was time to have dinner and a bath and put myself to bed, and that's about it.

(Aside: Dinner is sinfully easy, so long as I like barbecue. There's a place just down the road - attached to a gas station, in fact. Ah, how I love Mississippi - that serves AWESOME barbecue. For six bucks you can get a plate of one of about a dozen types of barbecued meat, along with two vegetables and a roll. It's enough to last me about three meals. I WILL NEVER COOK AGAIN.)

Thursday I was up before five, because my boss wanted me to drive down to Jackson to meet the crew down there. I ended up staying for most of the day, because I needed some waders in my size (the borrowed pair was pretty uncomfortable on Wednesday), and once again got home pretty late. The upshot of all this lateness was that by the time 9 am rolled around on Friday, I'd already gotten in my 40 hours... and I'm not allowed more than that in a week. So I got most of Friday off.

I love my new job. <3 <3 <3

The condo's coming along nicely, though I'll be glad when I've got my stuff from Texas, and don't have to live out of boxen anymore. Hopefully, this thing will happen the weekend of February 20th.

I have also learned something in my week-plus as a Mississippi resident: People in this state pronounce names in the most bizarre way imaginable. I mean, we all know that the newscasters who were saying 'Bi-LOX-i' instead of 'Bu-LUX-i' were full of shit. Would you, perhaps, like some cream cheese and bagels with your lox? However, I have also learned the following:

Lafayette is not "LA-fee-et", but "Lu-FAY-et."
Yocona is not "Yu-COHN-uh", but "YOK-nuh."
Hattiesburg is not "HAT-ees-burg", but "HAT-is-burg."
Belzoni is not "Bel-ZONE-ee", but "Bel-ZONE-uh."

So. I am happy, I am amused, I am busy, and I am NOT LIVING IN MOM'S GARAGE. All in all, everything is excellent. However, I miss Memphis folks terribly. Love to all of you!

Also: I had mushrooms in a salad for dinner last night. I love mushrooms. They make me happy. <3
